I hate to even post this as I always post everything I do for free. I don’t want to put a paywall between this work and teachers who are already underpaid. Resources - like buying books, paying for my website, blog, etc. - gets expensive when funds are tight. If you use my resources and would like to send a little support, I’d appreciate it. If you can’t, I understand and I’ll keep on posting anyway! Thank you to everyone for all of your support over the years!
This personal account by George Takei is heartfelt and powerful. This book is full of hope and funny moments, in addition to the more expected difficult parts of this series of events. Certainly a book that is timely given events in 2019 and the discussion of camps that are being used for “illegal” immigrants. I strongly suggest pairing this book with Takei’s powerful Ted Talk on his experiences - https://youtu.be/LeBKBFAPwNc . Takei shows us the power and dangers of democracy and why we must be involved citizens.
These two comics are posted online for FREE from Pop Culture Classroom. I wrote the lesson plans for both of these comics - teaching not only the history in the comics, but also how to read them. https://classroom.popcultureclassroom.org/product/educational-comix-series/colorful-history/
